Eventually I was invited to go to one of the so called Converting Plants in the Neenah-Menasha area. A Converting Plant was where they received heavy paper stock in big rolls, first printing on it and then converting to various packaging product such milk cartons, bacon cartons, and ice cream cartons.

As time went along, I got invited to go with someone from our group to Green Bay where among other products they made Northern Tissue. I had never seen a paper-making machine before and it was fascinating. The machines could be divided into three different kinds: tissue, board, and fine paper. The tissue machine made both toilet paper and facial tissue. These machines were relatively short and very fast with one large drier section. The board machines made the heavier paper for various carton products. These machines were slow and very long with many many drying rollers. The fine paper machines made ordinary office paper and upscale fancy writing paper. These machines were in between the tissue and board machine in paper weight, speed, and length of the drying section.
